At A Crossroads
Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at 4:33PM Dear Readers,
Well, the impossible seems to have happened. I never thought it would come to this, but here we are:
I've run out of things to say.
Those of you who know me well are sitting back, aghast, in your chairs right now. How can this be? Gillian? Silent?
I haven’t updated for two weeks and I realize it’s because I’ve covered the topics I planned to when this blog started late last April. Here’s what we’ve talked about so far:
Surviving The Layoff
Taking Some Time
Figuring Out What’s Next
Assessing the Job Market
Research Before Interviewing (still a sore topic – please, do more of this!)
Networking for Informational Interviews
Resume Writing
Cover Letters
Interview Protocol (you all liked these posts)
Thank You Notes
Dealing With The Money Question
Negotiating
Accepting A Job
Resigning
Your feedback has been wonderful and I’ve so appreciated so many of you continue to let me know that you’ve been helped by this information. But now I’m at a crossroads. Should I continue this blog? Is there anything left to talk about? The traffic on the site is still high but maybe we should try some user-generated content – are there topics you’d like me to cover or do you think we’ve reached the end?
A technical fluke of this site doesn’t allow for anonymity when people comment on a posting, so most of the comments I’ve received over the past six months have been to my email address (gilliang@aol.com). Send me a note and we’ll take a vote. All in favor of continuing? Any ideas for topics?
Love,
Gillian

Gillian.
I've enjoyed reading your blog and have taken both heart and value from many of your posts. As a fellow blogger--both personal and business--I fully appreciate the need to take a break. I feel the same about Twitte, Facebook et al. Is there really anything wrong with NOT posting your evey move. I mean, does anyone really care that you have aheadache? To that end, all of us who blog for professional purposes have developed this sense that we have to be posting all the time. I say, give it a rest, blog when something comes up and you feel it is worth sharing. After all, the blog serves the purpose of keeping you front and center with clients and prospects as well. As you encounter interesting people with interesting stories, you'll find more to blog about.
I agree with George, but as a company web site, if you don´t update it frequently people stop visiting and you may loose some business.
I enjoyed and comment on many topics posted in your blog and it helped me on a carrer transition even overseas (Brazil) and your advice (for free) helped me to gain confidence, eventhough all the preparation I´ve made and study done in the carreer matter and how to sell myself to new company were not used, it made me grow professionally and personally. I aimed a bazooka to kill a bee and it was not necessary. I am not saying that my new job isn´t good or important. It advanced my carreer a lot ($$ and responsibilities).
My suggestion is that you keep refreshing the blog with some of your clients experiences and companies needs and why they recused or choose a candidate or dislike a candidate... some tips on how to grow your carreer and prepare to next move. As a blogger I get inspiration on many things that cross my path and a quick post will make my followers happy and with the habbit of visiting it at least once a week.
Take a break, deep breath keep the exercice of writing alive. Who knows, you may turn it into a book (or a series of books). The draft you have, it is just a matter of getting more examples and put all the ideas on a logical order (or any order that seems logiacal to you and your editor) and move on your carreer as well. :-)
Because of your help to get my new job I have much less time to blog. But it is ok, I am happy and my blog was not for professional purpose, it could turn into, but not this this time.
Thanks again!
